VidhyaLohini has been serving as a warden of the Kasturba Gandhi BalikaVidyalaya(KGBV)Chakarpur, in Bazpur block of Udham Singh Nagar district, for past eight years. Born on March 15, 1967 in Almora district of Uttarakhand, the journey was never easy for Vidya, who is youngest among her two more siblings.

Despite all odds, mother of Vidhya Lohini provided her three children, including two daughters, equal education. With her hard work and resilience, Vidhya completed her schooling, pursued her B.A and then did her BTC before went on to become a teacher in a government school in year 1992.

For herwork in the field of girl’s education, she was bestowed with president’s award in year 2016. Before that, Vidhya had won the prestigious Sailesh Matiyani award in 2008, given annually by Uttarakhand state government to best teachers. She had also won Dev Narayan Diwedi award in 2007 for excellence in teaching at district level.

Before taking over as the warden of the KGBV Chakarpur in December 2009, there were numerous infrastructural shortcomings in the campus of the all-girls residential hostel. However, with her persistent efforts, things have drastically changed now.

Started from a single room of primary school in year 2007, the KGBV Chakapur, with the efforts of Vidhya and her staff, now has 50 girl’s students living there in the hostel. Vidhya has ensured that the campus is equipped with basis facilities like drinking water, furniture, electricity, toilets, dressing rooms for girls and mess.

Vidhya along with her staff members had travelled to far-flung villages of Bazpur block to identify girl drop out students, met their parents and convinced them to send their daughters to KGBV for restarting their education. Initially, she faced resistance from people but slowly and steadily, the results started coming with the increase in enrolment at KGBV.
In a unique initiative, Vidhya also sensitized the staff members of KGBV towards girls’ education and prepared a holistic plan for increasing the learning outcome of girl students living in KGBV hostel. She kept a close and regular watch on the execution of the plan.

Acknowledging the role of the staff personnel, Vidhya stressed on organizing regular capacity building workshops for the part-time teachers and other staff members of KGBV.

Besides studies, Vidhya started self-defence classes for the girl students at KGBV for their overall development and to empower them to protect themselves against any type of aggression and harassment. Skill training is also being provided to the girls for making them independent.
The girls of KGBV Chakarpur undergo monthly health check-up at nearest community health centre (CHC) and their profile cards have also been prepared to keep a track of their medical history.

The girls also participates in adventure sports activities like rappelling, trekking and horse riding, besides giving them exposure in computer training and English speaking.
